SERP fonctionnalités are everything on a results page au-delà the ten blue liens — featured snippets, Personnes Aussi Demander, knowledge panels, sitelinks, image/video packs, AI Overviews, and structured-data-driven résultats enrichis. The distinction que matters la plupart, and the un la plupart articles blur: some fonctionnalités are unlocked by données structurées (résultats enrichis — Product, Recipe, Event, Examiner), but la plupart are purely algorithmic with aucun markup lever at tout (featured snippets, PAA, knowledge panels, AI Overviews). Google is explicit que vous 'can't requête' a featured snippet. None of ces are a ranking factor — Google's docs dire rich-result eligibility 'doesn't affecter how lune page ranks.' Leur réel relevance is CTR, qui ils redistribute — souvent away from votre organic listing. The structured-data side garde shrinking (FAQ, HowTo, six types in June 2025) pendant que the algorithmic side grows (AI Overviews). Ce nests sous the Données structurées hub.

TL;DR — SERP fonctionnalités split cleanly into two mechanisms, and que split is the spine of ce whole topic: structured-data-driven résultats enrichis (Product, Recipe, Event, Examiner — vous ajouter markup to become eligible, jamais guaranteed) vs. purely algorithmic fonctionnalités (featured snippets, Personnes Aussi Demander, knowledge panels, AI Overviews, image/video packs, sitelinks — aucun markup lever exists). Google is explicit vous can’t requête a featured snippet. None of it is a ranking factor — Google’s docs dire structured-data eligibility “doesn’t affect how the page ranks”. The réel raison to care is CTR: fonctionnalités redistribute clicks, and plus fonctionnalités on a SERP généralement lowers position-1 CTR. The structured-data side garde shrinking (FAQ, HowTo, six types in June 2025); the algorithmic side garde growing (AI Overviews).

”SERP feature” isn’t Google’s term

Google’s Search Gallery organizes pris en charge result experiences by fonctionnalité and content type plutôt que defining a unique formal category appelé SERP fonctionnalités. Evidence for this claim Google's Search Gallery documents supported search appearances by feature and content type. Scope: Google Search result features; the industry term SERP feature is broader and not one formal Google taxonomy. Confidence: high · Verified: Google: Search Gallery Eligibility requirements and réel appearance are separate: valid markup ne fait pas guarantee a rich result. Evidence for this claim Valid structured data can establish eligibility for supported rich results but does not guarantee that Google will show them. Scope: Google rich-result eligibility and quality guidance. Confidence: high · Verified: Google: Understand structured data

Commencer with the vocabulary, parce que it’s a bon authority tell. “SERP feature” is industry/outil language. Google’s propre docs utiliser “search result features” and “visual elements,” and its Visual Elements Gallery defines les as “the building blocks of the Google Search results page that a user can perceive or interact with.” Que gallery is aussi a cleaner mental model que the flat “13 SERP features” listes you’ll trouver elsewhere, parce que it groupes everything into five buckets:

Notice que seulement un of ceux five buckets — résultats enrichis — is décrit as relying on votre markup. That’s the whole distinction in Google’s propre words.

The spine: structured-data-driven vs. purely algorithmic

There are two placement mechanisms: markup can create rich-result eligibility, while algorithmic features have no placement switch. Entity markup can still inform knowledge panels without creating them. Source : /technical-seo/on-page/structured-data/serp-features/

Three columns distinguish the mechanisms. Structured-data-driven rich results include Product, Recipe, Event, Review snippet, Breadcrumb, and Video rich results; markup creates eligibility but never guarantees display. Knowledge panels sit in the middle because Organization or Person markup can feed entity understanding without creating the panel. Algorithmic placements include featured snippets, People Also Ask, AI Overviews, sitelinks, and image packs; there is no markup switch for the placement itself.

Here’s the split every SEO devrait internalize. On un side are fonctionnalités vous pouvez faire yourself eligible pour with markup. On the autre are fonctionnalités Google and Bing decide to montrer fondé on the requête and le contenu, with aucun markup switch at tout.

Structured-data-driven (besoin markup — voir the Search Gallery): Product, Recipe, Event, Examiner snippet, Breadcrumb, and the ~25 autre current types. Google uses données structurées to comprendre le contenu on lune page and montrer it “in a richer appearance in search results, which is called a rich result.” Ce is exactly the topic of the Résultats enrichis deep dive, and the whole Données structurées hub ce article lives sous. Two hard rules from que hub carry over: markup rend vous eligible, jamais guaranteed — Google “does not guarantee that your structured data will show up in search results, even if your page is marked up correctly” — and the pris en charge liste garde shrinking (plus on que ci-dessous).

Purely algorithmic (aucun markup lever): Featured snippets, Personnes Aussi Demander, knowledge panels, AI Overviews, image and video packs (derived from on-page media, pas from schema), local packs, sitelinks, top stories, discussions/forums. Vous pouveznot tag votre façon into quelconque of ces. Conflating ce bucket with résultats enrichis is the unique la plupart courant error in competing articles — ils liste every fonctionnalité with “add markup” implementation tips, as si schema were a universal lever. It isn’t.

Are SERP fonctionnalités a ranking factor? Documented pour données structurées, inferred pour the rest

Ce is worth being precise à propos de, parce que the parent hub déjà establishes que données structurées isn’t a ranking factor via John Mueller’s repeated statements. There’s an même stronger, documented version pour ce article — but it’s narrower que “aucun SERP fonctionnalité is ever a ranking factor,” and it’s worth being exact à propos de the scope. Google’s structured-data policies page, describing ce que se produit quand une page obtient a structured-data manual action, dit une page “loses eligibility for appearance as a rich result; it doesn’t affect how the page ranks in Google web search.” That’s an réel documented sentence separating rich-result eligibility from web ranking — cleaner que quelconque relayed office-hours paraphrase — but it’s specifically à propos de the structured-data manual-action cas. Google hasn’t publié an equivalent line pour featured snippets, PAA, knowledge panels, or AI Overviews. The reasonable extension — pris en charge by how ceux systems en réalité fonctionner (a display-layer selection made on top of the existing ranking, pas a separate scoring input) — is que the même eligibility-vs-ranking split holds à travers the board. Treat que extension as informed inference, pas an identically documented fact, and lean on the sd-policies sentence as the un cas Google has en réalité put in writing.

The corollary John Mueller has offered is que doing something technically correct on une page doesn’t by itself faire it a meilleur page que it voudrait be sinon — technical correctness isn’t the même as content quality. Que Mueller framing is sourced seulement via Moteur de recherche Journal’s coverage; the companion principal coverage wasn’t fetchable pour direct verification, so treat it as secondary color, pas a verbatim quote — the documented sd-policies line ci-dessus is the citation to lean on.

How chaque major fonctionnalité en réalité obtient triggered

Featured snippets are the proof point pour “algorithmic, not markup.” A featured snippet is a “special box where the format of a regular search result is reversed, showing the descriptive snippet first.” Peut vous requête un, or tag une page as snippet-worthy? Google’s réponse is blunt: “You can’t. Google systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a user’s search request, and if so, elevates it.” The seulement lever site owners en réalité have is the opposite un — opting out with nosnippet or a lower max-snippet valeur. It’s a removal lever, pas an acquisition un.

Personnes Aussi Demander is a cas worth flagging pour a différent raison: là is aucun dedicated Recherche Google Central documentation page pour PAA, despite it appearing on the majority of English-language SERPs. Every mechanics claim vous lire à propos de PAA is industry inference from observation, pas documented fact. That’s a petit but genuine credibility beat — la plupart articles décrire PAA authoritatively pendant que citing nothing, parce que there’s nothing official to cite.

Knowledge panels sit on the spectrum entre the two buckets. Google’s Knowledge Panel aider (notably a consumer-product aider center, pas Search Central — qui itself indique vous Google doesn’t treat it as a webmaster fonctionnalité) describes les as information boxes à propos de entities in the Knowledge Graph que are automatically generated from sources à travers the web. Vous pouvez claim a panel à propos de votre propre organization or person pour suggested-edit accès — but vous pouvez’t créer un, and markup alone doesn’t produce un. Organization/Person schema with sameAs feeds the Knowledge Graph; it doesn’t guarantee a panel.

Résultats enrichis are the un genuinely markup-driven bucket — covered in complet on the Résultats enrichis page — and même ils carry the “no guarantee” caveat ci-dessus.

Bing’s featured-snippet / Q&A system fonctionne the même algorithmic façon, qui is utile confirmation que ce isn’t a Google quirk. Bing’s Ali Alvi (Principal Lead PM pour AI Products) and Fabrice Canel (Principal PM), interviewed by Moteur de recherche Journal, décrire Q&A as essentially the même core ranking algorithm as the blue liens with différent weighting, construit “pretty much end-to-end” on neural networks and machine- learning models with hundreds of millions of parameters. Bing peut même surface a Q&A réponse from a passage que isn’t currently ranking in the traditional results, parce que the Q&A system garde its propre memory of candidate passages. Human annotation assists the extraction of relevant blocks — it isn’t a rankable structured-data signal vous pouvez supply. Même split as Google: neural relevance extraction on top of ranking, pas a schema switch. On the opt-out side, Bing mirrors Google aussi — Fabrice Canel’s 2020 snippet-controls announcement gave webmasters robots meta contrôle over preview length: an opt-out/limite lever, pas an opt-in un.

CTR impact — the réel raison to care

CTR varies sharply by result type and position; position-one sitelinks lead this Sistrix comparison. Source : Sistrix

Grouped bars compare position-one, position-two, and position-three click-through rates. Sitelinks measure 46.9, 14.0, and 5.6 percent. Featured snippets measure 23.3, 20.5, and 13.3 percent. Knowledge panels measure 16.8, 13.2, and 12.6 percent. Shopping results measure 13.7, 8.0, and 6.4 percent.

Since SERP fonctionnalités don’t déplacer rankings, leur entier practical valeur is click- via rate, and ici the données is genuinely utile.

The baseline premier. Ahrefs’ study of clicks by position (dernier mis à jour October 2025, en utilisant aggregated Search Console click/impression données via August 2025) trouvé 96,98% of desktop clicks and 97,56% of mobile clicks land in the top 10 results — the study ne … plus publishes a separate top-3-seulement breakdown, so don’t repeat an older “top 3 take X%” figure vous may voir elsewhere. That’s the overwhelming majority of the pie SERP fonctionnalités carve up.

Sistrix has the meilleur per-feature CTR dataset I’ve seen — a mobile-SERP analysis of over 80 million keywords, premier publié in 2020 and dernier mis à jour July 2025 — CTRs by type of résultat de recherche:

Fonctionnalité présentPos 1 CTRPos 2 CTRPos 3 CTR
Sitelinks46,9%14,0%5,6%
Featured snippet23,3%20,5%13,3%
Knowledge panel16,8%13,2%12,6%
Shopping13,7%8,0%6,4%

Sistrix’s propre summary of the whole dataset: plus fonctionnalités = a lower CTR. Every supplémentaire fonctionnalité on a SERP fragments clicks plus loin away from position 1. That’s the redistribution effect in un line.

The flip side is que a rich result peut lift votre CTR relative to a plain listing — qui is où the cas studies from my Ahrefs structured-data guide come in, the même ones cited on the parent hub: Google’s propre numbers montrer Rotten Tomatoes at 25% plus élevé CTR, Nestlé at 82% plus élevé CTR, and Food Network at a 35% augmenter in visits on rich-result pages. So les deux choses are vrai at une fois: résultats enrichis peut win vous a bigger slice, même as SERP fonctionnalités overall shrink the total organic click pool.

On prevalence, a couple of numbers Backlinko cites (in its SERP-features page, dernier mis à jour April 2026) are bon myth-busters — worth noting ces are Backlinko’s citations of autre trackers, pas its propre study. Featured snippets obtenir outsized attention in SEO content but apparaître on seulement à propos de 0,24% of searches, per Semrush Sensor données from March 2026 — far rarer que personnes assume. Personnes Aussi Demander, by contrast, montre on roughly 53% of US requêtes, per Avancé Web Ranking (aucun date donné pour que figure). Chase the courant un, pas the shiny rare un.

How the SERP has shrunk (and grown)

The structured-data side of the fonctionnalité liste is contracting. Reusing the exact dates established on the Données structurées hub:

  • HowTo résultats enrichis were supprimé from desktop in 2023 and limited thereafter.
  • FAQ résultats enrichis were restricted in 2023 to government and health sites, alors entièrement supprimé by May 2026. The FAQPage type is encore valid markup — it simplement ne … plus produces a SERP enhancement pour la plupart sites.
  • Six plus types were supprimé in June 2025: Claim Examiner, Estimated Salary, Learning Video, Special Announcement, Vehicle Listing, and the old single-course format. Book Actions was announced in the même batch but was pas en réalité supprimé.

Meanwhile the algorithmic side is expanding, ci-dessus tout AI Overviews. Ahrefs’ AI Overviews study (300 000 keywords, desktop, comparing US Search Console données from March 2024 to March 2025 autour the AI Overviews rollout) trouvé ils reduce clicks to the top-ranking organic result by 34,5%; autre studies put the reduction même plus élevé, and figures vary by device, country, and requête type — treat quelconque unique number as directional, pas universal. Net effect: plus of the SERP is Google-generated content vous pouvez’t influence with markup, and moins of it is site-controllable résultats enrichis.

The zero-click debate — les deux sides

Ce is the strategic backdrop, and it’s an ouvrir dispute, pas a settled number, so I’ll give vous les deux sides plutôt que pick a winner.

SparkToro’s Rand Fishkin argues the SERP is becoming a walled garden. His 2026 analysis reports que in the premier four months of 2026, 68,01% of Recherche Googlees ended sans a click — up from 60,45% in 2024 and roughly 45% a decade ago — and que AI Overviews, quand présent, reduce CTR by nearly 60% and now apparaître on 20%+ of searches.

Google disputes the framing. Search Liaison Danny Sullivan, quoted in Moteur de recherche Journal’s coverage, appelé the zero-click narrative a “misleading claim” que “relies on flawed methodology that misunderstands how people use Search,” ajout que Google sends “billions of visits to websites every day, and the traffic we’ve sent to the open web has increased every year.” Google’s spécifique objections: SparkToro’s méthode counts a broad requête plus tard refined into a narrower un as “zero-click” même quand the utilisateur eventually visits a site, and it doesn’t account pour navigation to apps plutôt que the ouvrir web. Notably, Google offers methodology objections but aucun comparable publié figure of its propre.

My lire: don’t wait pour ce to resolve. Whatever the exact percentage, the direction is clair suffisant que vous devez assume some requêtes va simply jamais send vous a click, and plan autour the ones que encore peut.

Ce que vous pouvez en réalité do à propos de it

The practical fermer is short, parce que the whole point of the structured-data-vs- algorithmic split is que la plupart of the SERP isn’t a lever:

  1. Implement eligible données structurées accurately — that’s the un bucket vous genuinely contrôler, and it peut lift votre CTR. Do it correct (voir the Données structurées hub) and validate it.
  2. Don’t chase non-markup fonctionnalités. There’s aucun tag pour a featured snippet, PAA slot, knowledge panel, or AI Overview. Écrire clearly and comprehensively — that’s ce que surfaces vous in ceux — but arrêter looking pour a switch que doesn’t exist.
  3. Mesurer feature-specific CTR in Search Console. Watch votre click-through by requête and page; that’s où fonctionnalité effects en réalité montrer up in votre données.
  4. Accept que some fonctionnalités are simply pas influenceable — and don’t construire a strategy autour a rich result that’s déjà been supprimé.

Où to go suivant

Ce article nests sous the Données structurées hub. The closely connexe deep dives:

  • Résultats enrichis — the un genuinely markup-driven bucket of SERP fonctionnalités: qui types encore exist, eligibility, the removals, and tracking les in Search Console.
  • Balisage de données structurées — the schema.org vocabulary que unlocks rich-result eligibility.
  • JSON-LD — the recommended format pour writing que markup.

Ce sub-cluster lives in the broader on-page SEO cluster.
