How to read the result

  • Strong both: at least one paid click and an organic position of 10 or better. Consider an incrementality test; dollar impact equals current cost.
  • Paid only: paid activity exists without a matched top-10 organic query. The suggested action is to create or improve organic coverage.
  • Organic only: the query ranks in the top 10 with no matched Ads row. It may be suitable for a paid test when economics support it.
  • Weak: neither threshold is met. The model recommends deprioritizing it until demand or coverage changes.

Data sources & freshness

The engine normalizes capitalization, spacing, and common query variation, then pairs each Ads row with at most one exact or near-duplicate GSC row. Paid strength means at least one paid click. Organic strength means average position 10 or better. Unmatched GSC queries are added as organic-only or weak rows.

Does strong performance in both channels mean I should pause paid search?

No. The result identifies a candidate for a controlled test. Brand defense, conversion value, geography, device mix, and true incrementality still need to be considered.

What does dollar impact mean?

For strong-both rows, dollar impact is the current paid cost associated with that search term. It is spend exposed to a test, not a savings forecast.

Paid/Organic Overlap Quadrant

This beginner walkthrough defines paid and organic search overlap, joins a fictional Ads export with Search Console data, explains all four quadrants, demonstrates adjustable thresholds and export, and shows why current spend must never be presented as measured savings.

Step 1

The Paid and Organic Overlap Quadrant combines paid search terms from Google Ads with unpaid search queries from Google Search Console. It groups the supplied rows into four transparent states and keeps the supporting clicks, cost, and average organic position nearby. The result is a work queue for review and testing—not an automatic budget decision.

Step 2

Paid search is traffic from ads. Organic search is traffic from unpaid results. Search Console, shortened to G-S-C, reports organic queries, clicks, impressions, and average position. A quadrant is simply one of four categories based on whether paid and organic evidence clear their thresholds. Average position summarizes where results appeared; it is not a promise that every searcher saw the same rank.

Step 3

Use this tool to shortlist terms with strong paid and organic coverage, investigate paid-only terms as possible organic-content questions, find organic-only terms that may justify a bounded paid test, deprioritize weak supplied evidence, or export a shared channel review. Each use case still requires intent, economics, and experiment judgment.

Step 4

Paste the Ads search-terms table first, add a line containing three hyphens, and then paste the G-S-C Queries table. Ads needs Search term, Clicks, and Cost. G-S-C needs Query, Clicks, Impressions, and Position. You can also choose two local files in that order. The browser parses the rows locally; this tool does not upload them.

Step 5

The two controls define what strong means for this analysis. By default, paid strength requires at least one paid click. Organic strength requires an average position of ten or better, where a smaller number is better. These editable cutoffs are workflow heuristics, not universal benchmarks, ranking guarantees, or estimates of incremental value.

Step 6

This fictional Acme fixture is designed to show every quadrant. Two Ads terms match organic rows, one Ads term has no organic match, and one top-position organic query has no Ads row. The values are teaching data, not account performance or recommended levels. Real exports should cover comparable dates, countries, devices, and search types.

Step 7

Select Analyze. The engine normalizes the query text, matches exact or bounded lexical near-duplicates, and lets each Ads term consume at most one organic row. It classifies the Ads rows first, then adds any unused G-S-C queries as Organic Only or Weak. Four plain-language finding cards appear for this fixture.

Step 8

Acme running shoes has twenty-four paid clicks and thirty-eight organic clicks, with organic position three point two. It clears both default thresholds and becomes Strong Both. The one hundred eighty in source currency is the current paid cost exposed to a possible test. It is not forecast savings and does not prove those paid clicks would move to organic.

Step 9

Wide trail shoes has eleven paid clicks but no matched organic row, so it is Paid Only. The suggested action is to review whether an organic landing page should be created or improved. First check shared intent, realistic ranking potential, conversion value, and existing site coverage. A quadrant does not prove that publishing new content is worthwhile.

Step 10

Winter trail sandals has zero paid clicks and an organic position of eighteen, so neither default condition is strong. The Weak action is to deprioritize it until demand or coverage changes. Weak describes this supplied reporting period and these thresholds; it is not a permanent judgment about the query or product.

Step 11

Shoe size guide is an unused G-S-C query at position two point eight, with fifty-two organic clicks and no paid row. That makes it Organic Only. A paid test may be worth considering only if the query has appropriate intent and conversion economics. Organic strength alone does not prove that advertising will add profitable, incremental demand.

Step 12

Now require twenty-five paid clicks and an organic position of three or better, then analyze again. Acme running shoes misses both stricter cutoffs and moves from Strong Both to Weak. Shoe size guide stays Organic Only because position two point eight still qualifies. Always preserve the thresholds and reporting period with the result; small rule changes can change the queue.

Step 13

Matching normalizes capitalization, spacing, common variation, stemming, and a tightly bounded one-character difference. It is lexical, not semantic. Synonyms can remain separate, and each organic row is used at most once. Review important matches manually, especially brand, competitor, gender, location, or product-modifier terms where a close string can still carry different intent.

Step 14

Download results C-S-V saves paid-organic-overlap dot C-S-V. It includes term, quadrant, action, paid and organic clicks, full paid cost, organic position, and potential spend overlap. For example, the paid-only row retains its ninety of paid cost while potential overlap remains zero. Add scope, owner, test design, guardrails, and measured outcomes downstream.

Step 15

Before acting, align both exports, review every important match, confirm conversion value, and separate brand-defense decisions from generic-query tests. Average position is not a rank guarantee, thresholds are heuristics, and current cost is not incremental savings. Use a geo, audience, or time holdout with conversion-lag, seasonality, brand-safety, and sample-balance checks before changing spend.

Use quadrants to choose the next investigation

Align dates, countries, devices, and search types before comparing the channels. Verify query intent and conversion value, protect brand and competitor-sensitive terms, then use controlled tests for any spend change. Rerun the same documented rules on a comparable period to see whether the evidence changes.
