GEO is optimizing content to be cited in AI-generated answers — the biggest shift from traditional SEO: branded web mentions (0.664 correlation) outperform backlinks, and rank-5 pages can outperform rank-1 with the right tactics.

What GEO is
For decades, search worked one way: you typed a query, got a list of links, and clicked one. SEO was the craft of getting your link to rank near the top.

The simplest way to hold the difference in your head:
- SEO = get ranked in the list of links.
- GEO = get cited in the AI-written answer.
How GEO differs from SEO
They overlap a lot — but the goal shifts:

Is GEO the same as AEO?
Mostly, yes. AEOAnswer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so engines deliver it as a direct answer — featured snippets, voice assistants, and AI search — rather than just a ranked link. Coined for voice search in 2018 and revived for the LLM era. Google's position is that it's still SEO. (Answer Engine Optimization) is an older label for the same basic idea — getting picked as the answer. People use the two interchangeably. The newer GEO label comes from an academic paper (more on that in the Advanced tab) and tends to imply the generative AI surfaces specifically.
What actually helps
The research and my own data point in a consistent direction:
- Get mentioned around the web. Coverage in trade press, industry roundups, Reddit, and YouTube is the single strongest predictor of showing up in Google’s AI Overviews — stronger than your backlink profile.
- Make your content easy to quote. Add real quotes from experts, back claims with statistics, and cite your sources. AI prefers citable, factual content.
- Keep doing solid SEOSolidJS SEO is the set of practices for making SolidJS apps crawlable, indexable, and fast. The thing most people get wrong
You don’t need a brand-new strategy or special “AI markup.” Google’s official
guidance is blunt: you don’t need llms.txt files, you don’t need to “chunk” your
content, and you don’t need to rewrite everything for AI. The fundamentals carry

Where the term comes from
GEO isn’t a marketing buzzword someone invented for a conference talk — it has a real academic origin. The paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (Aggarwal et al., IIT Delhi and Princeton University) was presented at KDD 2024 in Barcelona; the preprint is arXiv:2311.09735, first submitted in November 2023.
The researchers framed a “generative engine” as any system that synthesizes an answer from multiple sources and summarizes it with an LLMA large language model (LLM) is a deep-learning model trained on massive text corpora to predict the next token and generate human-like text. LLMs use the transformer architecture and power AI search features like Google's AI Overviews (Gemini) and Bing Copilot (GPT-4). — Google AI OverviewsAI Overviews are the AI-generated summary box Google shows above or within its regular search results, written by Gemini models from pages retrieved out of Google's normal Search index. Their concern was the third stakeholder: content creators, who have little control over when and how generative engines surface their work. GEO is their proposed framework for improving content visibility in those generated responses, plus GEO-bench, a benchmark of 10,000 queries drawn from 9 sources across 25 domains to test it.
The nine strategies — and what worked
The paper tested nine content edits and measured the change in a Position-Adjusted Word Count metric (it weights cited content by how prominently — and how early — it appears in the answer). The standouts:

The pattern is clear: AI engines reward content that looks like evidence — quotable expert statements, hard numbers, named sources. They do not reward the legacy ranking trick of stuffing keywords; in the paper it produced a small negative effect. That’s the single most important inversion from old-school SEO.
The rank-5 inversion — GEO favors the challenger
Here’s the finding that gets under-reported and that reframes who should care about GEO most. The effect of these tactics depends heavily on where you already rank:
- A rank-5 page using the Cite Sources strategy saw a +115.1% visibility lift.
- A rank-1 page using the same tactic lost -30.3% visibility.
Generative engines condition on content quality and citability more than on raw backlink authority, so lower-ranked pages have far more room to gain — and the incumbent at the top can actually be displaced. GEO is leverage for the challenger, not the incumbent. If you’re stuck at position 4–7 in a SERP that now has an AI Overview, this is your opening.
A diverging comparison shows the change in position-adjusted visibility after applying the cite-sources tactic. The rank-five page increased 115.1 percent, while the rank-one page decreased 30.3 percent. These values come from the GEO benchmark and do not establish how every current generative engine will respond.

What predicts AI visibility: branded mentions, not Domain Rating
The academic work is about on-page edits. The other half of GEO is off-site. In Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands by Louise Linehan and Xibeijia Guan, the researchers looked at which brand signals correlate with appearing in Google AI Overviews:

Branded web mentions correlate roughly double what Domain Rating does. That inverts the traditional SEO hierarchy, where link-based domain authority sat at the top. As I put it: “It shouldn’t come as a surprise that prominent brands are mentioned on pages that website owners deemed worthy enough to link to.” The usual caveat applies — correlation isn’t causation — but the signal is consistent and it points off-site: get the internet talking about your brand.
In a related study on the same dataset, being mentioned on highly-linked pages correlated with AI mentionsThree distinct states of AI visibility: retrieved (an AI fetched your page as source material), mentioned (your brand appears in the answer text), and cited (your URL is linked as a source). They don't always happen together, and each is measured with a different tool. at ρ=0.70 for Google AI Overviews and ρ=0.40 for Perplexity — but only ρ=0.12 for ChatGPT. ChatGPT is the outlier, and I’d attribute that to its heavy reliance on partnership deals for its top citation sources rather than the open web.
What Google officially says
Google’s position is the perfect anchor for the whole topic: “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI searchAI search uses large language models and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to synthesize an answer from multiple sources rather than returning a ranked list of links. Examples include Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, and Perplexity. is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Their generative features are “rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems,” so SEO best practices still apply.
Google also published an explicit list of things you do not need to do for AI search — worth internalizing because the GEO-services industry sells several of them:

Keep the traffic reality in view
GEO is real, but don’t let anyone sell you AI search as an imminent replacement for Google traffic. By my numbers (from my ChatGPT vs. Google traffic analysis), Google still sends roughly 190x more traffic to websites than ChatGPT, and ChatGPT’s click-through rate is about 96% lower. “Google connects people to websites; ChatGPT keeps them in conversation.” The nuance worth holding: AI traffic is small but high-intent — at Ahrefs it converts far better than traditional search. Optimize for it as a quality play, not a volume play.
Practical tactics
Putting it together, in evidence-ranked order:
- Off-site: earn authentic branded mentions. Trade press, industry rankings, analyst coverage, Reddit, YouTube. Highest-correlated factor (0.664).
- On-page: add quotes, statistics, and citations. The three highest-lift edits in the GEO paper. Make your content the citable source.
- Write clearly and stay fresh. Fluency helps; AI assistants lean toward newer content more than traditional search does.
- Keep standard SEO hygiene. Crawlable, indexable, well-structured. You can’t be cited if you can’t be retrieved.
- Skip the snake oil. No
llms.txt, no keyword stuffing, no inauthentic mention-buying.
My framing throughout: GEO is evolution, not revolution. The fundamentals — quality content, technical accessibilityWeb accessibility means designing sites so people with disabilities can use them, per the W3C's WCAG guidelines. It overlaps with SEO in specific, checkable ways — alt text, heading structure, descriptive link text, captions, and page speed all serve both audiences — but Google has said accessibility itself is not a ranking factor, and most WCAG success criteria (keyboard focus order, ARIA live regions, form labels) have no SEO effect at all., E-E-A-T — underpin both SEO and GEO. The delta is that SEO optimizes for where your link ranks; GEO optimizes for how the internet talks about you.

GEO optimization checklist
A pass to make your content and brand more citable in AI answers:
Off-site — earn the mentions (highest leverage)
- You’re earning branded mentions on third-party sites (trade press, industry roundups, analyst coverage) — the 0.664-correlated signal.
- You have a presence on the platforms AI cites heavily — Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia (where you legitimately qualify).
- You are not buying or forcing inauthentic brand mentions (Google flags these as ineffective).

Measure GEO performance
Answer visibility rate
Metric: Prompts where the brand or page appears in the answer, divided by a fixed prompt set. What it tells you: Whether visibility changes across the questions the audience actually asks. How to pull it: Run the same documented prompts by engine, location, and date; store outputs. Benchmark / realistic range: Establish a baseline by topic and system because output variance prevents a universal target. Cadence: Monthly, with major model changes annotated.
